HEAVY monsoon rains enhanced by the southwest monsoon (habagat) triggered street-level flooding across Metro Manila on Saturday, August 8, forcing the continuous suspension of the Pasig River Ferry Service.
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) reported that ferry operations remained grounded for a fourth consecutive day since August 5 due to unsafe water conditions. Authority officials expect services to resume on Monday, August 10, pending weather improvements.
Meanwhile, persistent downpours left key thoroughfares inundated with floodwaters reaching up to eight inches deep across several cities:
- Parañaque: Water levels hit eight inches along Dr. A. Santos Avenue following the overflow of Villanueva Creek, prompting the deployment of mobile pumps and flood-control crews.
- Manila: Eight-inch flooding affected the Roxas Boulevard service road and stretches of Taft Avenue near Pedro Gil, Escoda Street, and Quirino Avenue, though some portions subsided later in the afternoon.
- Makati & Malabon: Floodwaters reached eight inches inside the EDSA-Pasong Tamo Tunnel, while four-inch flooding was recorded along Gov. Pascual Avenue in Malabon.
- Quezon City: Local authorities reported knee-deep flooding in multiple areas during peak rainfall hours.
Despite the localized flooding, the MMDA confirmed that all affected major roads remained passable to motor vehicles.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) maintained a heavy rainfall warning for Metro Manila and Luzon, advising the public to remain vigilant against potential flash floods and landslides.
