MOVING swiftly to protect vulnerable communities from rising floodwaters, the Marikina City local government unit (LGU) deployed high-capacity mobile booster flood pumps to Barangays Malanday and Tumana on Monday, August 10.
The initiative, spearheaded by Mayor Marjorie Ann “Maan” Teodoro in coordination with the Metro Manila Council, introduces equipment capable of discharging floodwater at roughly three times the rate of existing infrastructure.
The deployment directly addresses issues at the District 2 Tumana Pumping Station, which became non-operational during recent weather disturbances.
The station’s temporary shutdown led to water accumulation in key low-lying areas, including Libis Bulelak and Creekside.
According to Mayor Teodoro, the upgraded booster pumps are designed to significantly increase the volume of water pushed out per hour toward designated drainage outfalls, expediting relief for affected residents while clearing and pumping operations remain underway.
Following the initial disruption on Sunday, August 9, the LGU immediately coordinated with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and its private contractor to demand urgent repairs on the facility.
In response, DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon dispatched technical crews to restore the main pumping station while deploying supplemental mobile units to support the city’s immediate drainage efforts.
Alongside flood mitigation, city officials have maintained active disaster response operations.
The LGU established specialized safe spaces for pets owned by evacuees sheltered at Malanday Elementary School to ensure animals are not left behind.
Preemptive evacuation efforts across the city saw 2,303 individuals safely accommodated across 28 designated temporary shelters.
City authorities confirmed that despite the localized water pooling, no major disaster-level flooding has occurred across Marikina, and all primary and secondary roads remain fully passable to all types of vehicles.
The local government continues to monitor weather developments while technicians complete necessary repairs on the primary drainage systems.
