THE San Juan City Local School Board (LSB) has approved a resolution authorizing the allocation of funds to procure walk-through and handheld metal detectors for all public schools across the city, aiming to reinforce campus safety and security.

Chaired by Mayor Francis Zamora, the board greenlit the measure during a meeting on September 10, following growing national concerns over campus security.

The new equipment is designed to enhance screening procedures for individuals entering school grounds.

According to the local government, walk-through metal detectors will establish a primary security checkpoint at school entrances, while supplementary handheld units will empower security and designated personnel to conduct thorough secondary screenings when necessary.

The procurement initiative aligns with broader national efforts following the Department of Education’s (DepEd) push to equip public schools nationwide with metal detectors.

Led by Secretary Sonny Angara, the initiative seeks to deter students from sneaking bladed weapons or other hazards onto campuses, responding to recent violent incidents in schools across the country.

Following the board’s endorsement, the local government is set to jumpstart the procurement process in strict compliance with government procurement laws.

“This initiative reflects our continued commitment to strengthening campus security and protecting the safety and well-being of our students, teachers, and school personnel,” Mayor Zamora stated.

The security upgrade underscores San Juan City’s proactive stance in creating a secure, peaceful environment that fosters effective teaching and learning for students and faculty alike.
