NEARLY 900 Tarlaqueño artisans are set to benefit from expanded economic opportunities as Tarlac officially joined the Philippine Textile Map during a ceremonial dressing hosted by the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) at the DOST-PTRI Tela Gallery.
The event featured the symbolic placement of the Anihan weave pattern from Tarlac’s signature Kanlahi weave onto the national map.
Spearheaded by DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr., DOST-PTRI Director Julius L. Leaño Jr., Tarlac Governor Christian Yap, and First Lady Melissa Yeung-Yap, the milestone marks a major step forward for the province’s emerging weaving sector.
The MaYap Weavers and Crocheters Livelihood Association, comprising approximately 80 weavers and 780 crocheters, has traditionally focused on intricate crochet work.
Through DOST-PTRI support and modern technology adoption, the group expanded into weaving, giving rise to Kanlahi weaves crafted exclusively by local hands.
“Sa tulong po ng DOST-PTRI at lahat ng ahensya ng DOST ay mararamdaman ninyo ang tulong ng agham para gumaganda ang inyong mga buhay sa pamamagitan ng negosyo,” stated DOST Secretary Solidum, emphasizing the role of science, technology, and innovation in enhancing local craftsmanship and livelihoods.
Association President Marie Claire Banda expressed her gratitude, noting that weaving—once viewed as an art form exclusive to other regions and Indigenous communities—has now taken root in Tarlac.
Director Leaño highlighted Tarlac’s strategic location as a convergence point for raw materials across Pangasinan, Zambales, and Nueva Ecija. He shared plans to push for additional support in DOST-PTRI’s 2027 budget to position Tarlac as a yarn production hub supplying neighboring regions like the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).
Governor Yap celebrated the initiative as a historic achievement for local employment, stating that creating sustainable industries and jobs remains the highest form of public service.
By integrating modern innovation with traditional heritage, Tarlac is weaving a brighter future where cultural preservation and community livelihoods thrive hand in hand.
