Smart and Lynk expand satellite connectivity tests to Batangas to strengthen disaster resilience

SMART Communications, Inc., the wireless unit of PLDT Inc., in partnership with satellite operator Lynk Global, has extended its Direct-to-Device (D2D) satellite service testing to Batangas.

The trial aims to bolster national disaster response capabilities and reinforce telecommunications infrastructure during severe weather events and emergency situations.

Building on initial pilot tests held in Catanduanes and Ilocos Norte, the Batangas trial focused on maintaining critical communications when traditional ground-based mobile networks become temporarily unavailable.

Led by Smart’s Network Strategy and Architecture Team alongside Lynk, the operation simulated post-disaster scenarios to evaluate satellite connectivity across disrupted areas.

A key highlight of the test was demonstrating satellite-enabled cell broadcasting, which allows public safety warnings and emergency alerts to be transmitted directly to standard, unmodified smartphones already used by consumers.

Additionally, the team evaluated two-way SMS messaging capabilities to ensure residents can request emergency assistance during major power outages or typhoon-induced network disruptions.

“Reliable communication is essential in times of crisis. As disasters continue to pose challenges to communities across the country, PLDT and Smart remain committed to investing in technologies that help ensure critical information reaches people when they need it most,” said Menardo G. Jimenez Jr., PLDT Chief Operating Officer and Network Head. “Our mission at PLDT is to be there for all Filipinos, whether they are talking to family abroad, or requesting for assistance from a rooftop in the middle of a calamity.”

Beyond emergency response, D2D satellite technology provides continuous coverage to unserved and underserved rural regions.

This capability extends cellular connectivity to remote workers, maritime travelers, and fishermen operating in off-shore zones without requiring specialized equipment.

By integrating satellite capabilities with existing mobile infrastructure, the PLDT Group continues to advance its disaster preparedness framework and support national business continuity.

The initiative highlights the carrier’s commitment to leveraging next-generation digital tools to enhance public safety services and foster resilient communities across the disaster-prone Philippine archipelago.
