Bulag na Philippine Eagle, nailigtas sa Davao

NAILIGTAS ang isang Philippine Eagle (Pithecophaga jifferyi) na bulag ang isang mata
at may malubhang kapansanan sa kabilang mata sa Lipadas River, Davao City, nitong
Martes.


Kasama sa mga nag-rescue ang ilang biologists mula sa Philippine Eagle Foundation
(PEF), at ilang forest guards mula grupo ng katutubong tribo na Bagobo–Klata.


Pinangalanan ang agila na Lipadas, malapit sa ilog Lipadas na kinakitaan dito.


Ayon kay Jayson Ibañez, PEF director ng research and conservation — na kasama rin sa
mga nag-rescue — ito ang kaunaunhang rescue ng isang wild eagle na iisa ang mata.
Ito rin ang unang dokumentadong kaso ng isang agila na nagkaroon ng deperensya sa
mata sa panahong nasa pugad pa ito.


Ayon pa kay Ibañez, namamaga raw ang eyeballs ng agila at ang kanang mata nito ay
tuluyang nang nabulag.


“We always make it a point to rescue and save each imperiled individual. And with its
status now being one-eyed, its survival chances in the wild are very low. But if we
rescue it and take care of it in captivity, it can still contribute new individuals to the
population by breeding it and then releasing any potential offspring back to the wild
to help increase population numbers,” dagdag pa ni Ibañez.

Ayon kay Dr. Bayani Vandenbroeck, consultant ng PEF, mukha raw malusog ang
Philippine Eagle, maliban na lamang sa kanang mata na bulag. Malaki raw ang
posibilidad na tuluyan nang mabulag ang kaliwang mata nito kung hindi ito
maaagapan. Wala raw anumang pisikal na kapansanan ang ibon mula sa tama ng bala
o sugat at ang mga buto nito ay maayos. May timbang na 4.5 kilograms ang agila.


Sinabi ni Rowell Taraya, PEF senior biologist na ipadadala ang blood samples ng agila
sa Biology Laboratory ng University of the Philippines Diliman para sa “confirmatory
DNA sexing” at para ma-assess ng resident ophthalmologist at foreign experts kung
ano ang nararapat gawin para mailigtas ang kaliwang mata ng agila.
