POLICE arrested a 33-year-old caregiver accused of stealing nearly ₱595,000 worth of cash and gold jewelry from a 77-year-old person with disability (PWD) in Barangay San Antonio, Makati City.
The suspect, identified by police as alias “Sophia,” a resident of Pasig City, was arrested at around 8:40 p.m. on Aug. 12 following a complaint filed by the victim’s son and authorized representative.
Police said the stolen items consisted of ₱294,787 in cash and gold jewelry valued at approximately ₱300,000.
According to investigators, the alleged theft was discovered at around 7 a.m. the same day after the victim’s cash and jewelry were found missing from a bag inside his room.
Investiga tors said the items were allegedly replaced with a bundle of cut, blank white paper placed inside an envelope and wrapped with tape.
During the investigation, Sophia reportedly admitted to the alleged theft and returned ₱
Police, however, said the remaining cash and jewelry had yet to be recovered.
Personnel from the Investigation and Detective Management Section of the Makati City Police Station carried out the arrest under the supervision of Police Col. Pedro A. Alagano Jr., chief of police.
The suspect remains in police custody as authorities prepare a qualified theft complaint for inquest proceedings before the Makati City Police Station. Police said the filing will proceed once the required supporting documents have been completed.
The Southern Police District, led by Police Brig. Gen. Glenn Oliver C. Cinco, said it continues to strengthen police operations and response efforts, particularly in cases involving vulnerable members of the community.
Authorities reminded the public to remain vigilant when entrusting the care of elderly and vulnerable individuals to caregivers and other household personnel.
The suspect’s allegations remain subject to the appropriate legal proceedings, and she is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
