PRESIDENT Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. called on Filipinos to uphold freedom by respecting the dignity and rights of others and working together to build a better nation as the country commemorated Ninoy Aquino Day on Friday, August 21.
In his official message marking the national holiday, President Marcos highlighted that the commemoration serves as a powerful reminder that liberty comes with civic responsibility.
“This day reaffirms that freedom carries with it a collective duty to respect the dignity and rights of others and to contribute to the good of our nation,” the President stated.
The Chief Executive noted that Ninoy Aquino Day offers the public a crucial opportunity to reflect on history and draw meaningful lessons aimed at safeguarding democratic values.
According to Marcos, the legacy of the late senator highlights the enduring bravery of the Filipino spirit: “The memory of Ninoy Aquino reminds us of the courage of Filipinos to stand by their convictions and contribute to our nation’s democratic journey.”
While acknowledging that the modern threats to democracy differ from those of previous decades, President Marcos emphasized that the core responsibility to protect public institutions remains unchanged.
Marcos identified several contemporary challenges facing the nation, including the spread of disinformation, societal division, institutional distrust, and civic indifference.
To combat these issues, he urged citizens to maintain active engagement in national governance and public affairs.
“Ninoy’s legacy encourages us to meet these challenges with vigilance and faith in the Filipino people as we work together to deliver meaningful progress for all,” President Marcos said.
The chief executive further reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to defending Philippine sovereignty, upholding the rule of law, and ensuring that individual liberty translates into tangible economic opportunities for all citizens.
Closing his statement, the President called for a “solemn and purposeful remembrance” as the country continues to work toward a peaceful and prosperous Bagong Pilipinas.
Ninoy Aquino Day, observed annually every August 21 as a special non-working holiday under Republic Act 9256, honors former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., the leading opposition figure against the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Sr.
Aquino was assassinated on the tarmac of the Manila International Airport on August 21, 1983, upon returning from exile in the United States—an event that ultimately catalyzed the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution.
