A high-level German delegation visited the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) National Headquarters on August 6 to observe the organization’s emergency response framework and explore deeper avenues for disaster management cooperation.
Led by German Member of Parliament Sascha van Beek, the delegation included German Ambassador to the Philippines Dr. Andreas Pfaffernoschke, First Secretary for Political Affairs and Head of Press Dr. Pia Friedrich, and Meenakshinathan Ramalingompillai, Head of Country Office of the German Red Cross (GRC) in the Philippines.
They were received by PRC Chairman and CEO Richard J. Gordon and Secretary General Dr. Gwendolyn Pang.
During the visit, Chairman Gordon outlined the humanitarian organization’s extensive disaster response machinery, highlighting its Emergency Field Hospitals, nationwide logistics supply chain, volunteer network, and proactive anticipatory action mechanisms designed for rapid deployment during crises.
“We have a buffet of disasters, but we have to live with it,” Gordon stated during the meeting. “That is why we continue investing in preparedness so we can respond anytime, anywhere, and save more lives. We look forward to translating our partnership into concrete initiatives that will further strengthen humanitarian action.”
Ambassador Pfaffernoschke echoed the critical need for pre-disaster investment, emphasizing how quick-onset hazards require immediate readiness.
“For many disasters, we have time to prepare—but not for earthquakes. Preparedness is key. That is why it is important for us to understand how organizations like the Philippine Red Cross build their response capabilities and prepare for emergencies,” he remarked.
The bilateral visit underscores a robust, long-term humanitarian relationship between the Philippines and Germany.
Since 2012, German government and Red Cross support has channeled over ₱3.52 billion into Philippine disaster risk reduction, logistics, anticipatory action, and community resilience programs.
Recognizing the PRC’s operational track record, Ramalingompillai noted, “The Philippine Red Cross is one of the strongest National Societies in the Asia-Pacific region. We look forward to strengthening our cooperation and continuing to learn from one another so we can better serve vulnerable communities.”
The engagement reaffirmed both parties’ commitment to advancing joint humanitarian projects, expanding disaster readiness measures, and enhancing life-saving capabilities across vulnerable Philippine communities.
