“WALA na tayong workers. Most of our skilled workers (are) abroad. Most of our best
welders and electricians are all in Saudi Arabia, the Middle East.”


Ito ang paninindigan ni Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri sa budget hearing ng DBCC
noong Miyerkules, habang inuulit niya ang panawagan na itaas sa P150 ang minimum wage,
na makatutulong sa skilled workers sa bansa.


Sumagot si Zubiri sa sinabi ni Finance Secretary Benjamin Diokno, na kaya raw kumukuha ng
Chinese workers ay dahil sa kakulangan ng skilled workers sa bansa.


“Bakit, o bakit nangyayari ito?” tanong ni Zubiri sa DBCC o Development Budget
Coordination Committee hearing kamakailan. Dagdag pa niya, sa totoo lang, alam ng ating
skilled workers na hindi sila mabubuhay sa maliit na sweldo sa bansa… “ kawawang-kawawa
po ang ating mga kababayan.”

Sinabi ni Diokno na magkakaroon ng inflation kung itataas sa P150 ang minimum wage.
Ayon pa kay Zubiri, kailangang daw ibaba ang presyo ng kuryente, na sobrang mahal, ayon
sa investors. Kailangan din daw ibaba ang presyo ng pagkain.

Ipinaliwanag ni Zubiri na lomolobo ang kita ng malalaking kumpanya gaya ng JG Summit
(P9.5 bilyon, sa unang bahagi ng 2023); Ayala Corp., Tumaas ng 55 percent; Philippine
Airlines, P13.6 bilyon net income; at Megaworld, lomobo sa 71 percent sa unang bahagi ng 2023.

Nakausap na raw niya ang ilang Taipans at sinabing pwedeng magdagdag ng sweldo.
Sa minimum wage na P610 isang araw sa Metro Manila, magiging mahirap na humanap ng
skilled workers para sa construction projects ng gobyerno, dahil nasa abroad sila na
sumusweldo nang mas malaki, aniya pa.
