IPINASA sa Senado nitong Peb. 26 ang Senate Bill No. 2492, na nagtatatag ng Philippine Maritime Zones.

Ito ay bilang pagtugon sa probisyon na nakapaloob sa “UN Convention on the Law of the Sea” pati na rin ang “2016 Arbitral Ruling” sa The Hague.

Ayon sa panukala, ang karapatan sa soberanya at hurisdiksyon ng Pilipinas sa loob ng 200-mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) sa West Philippine Sea ay itinatampok kasama ng Benham Rise na tatawaging “Talampas ng Pilipinas”.

Nilinaw ng batas ang boundaries ng archipelagic, internal waters ng bansa, pati na rin ang EEZ na kung saan ipinatutupad ng pamahalaan ng Pilipinas ang pagka-soberanya nito pati na rin hurisdiksyon.

Kapag naisabatas, magbibigay ito nang patuloy na proteksyon sa mga mangingisdang Pilipino sa pagkuha sa malawak na marine life sa West Philippine Sea, pati na rin ang pagtuklas at paggamit ng gobyerno sa energy resources dito.

Ayon kay Sen. Francis Tolentino, principal author, “Within the maritime zones law, we can forge more alliances with other countries, under a rules-based international order in compliance with UNCLOS… [Said law] is 300 years in the making.”

“Kahit ano pong mang­yari ngayon sa Bajo de Masinloc… [maging] sa karagatan ng West Philippine Sea, kahit ano po ang mang­yari ngayon sa Benham Rise, nakatatak na po sa kasaysayan ang “Philippine Maritime Zones Law” na magiging bantayog ng ating Kalayaan,” ayon pa sa senador.
