THE San Juan City government officially inaugurated three green infrastructure projects valued at ₱39.5 million on Wednesday, Sept. 2, aimed at bolstering urban sustainability, biodiversity, and climate resilience in the densely populated municipality.
Led by Mayor Francis Zamora, local officials gathered along E. Rodriguez Street in Barangay Addition Hills for the ribbon-cutting, blessing, and marker unveiling.
The facilities were developed under the Department of Budget and Management’s (DBM) “Green, Green, Green” Program via a Local Government Support Fund agreement, in partnership with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).
The newly inaugurated projects include:
- Birdwatching Observation Deck: Situated within the newly established bird sanctuary in Barangay Addition Hills, designed for public recreation and wildlife conservation.
- Ermitaño Creek Linear Park: A redeveloped green space revitalizing the surrounding waterway and local habitat.
- 12 Solar-Powered Waiting Sheds: Installed at strategic locations citywide, featuring integrated bicycle racks and charging stations to encourage active mobility.
Mayor Zamora highlighted the uniqueness of the bird-watching facility, calling it a milestone in his public service career and a major step forward for the city’s environmental agenda.
Barangay Addition Hills Chairman Herbert Chua, who spearheaded the 2023 ordinance declaring the area a protected bird sanctuary, noted the transformation of Ermitaño Creek from an ecologically dead waterway into a thriving habitat.
Community cleanup drives and water rehabilitation efforts have allowed the site to recover, with 27 distinct bird species now documented in the sanctuary alongside returning marine life.
Chua added that the city plans to establish a dedicated bird trail and document local wildlife species.
MMDA Deputy Chairperson Usec. Frisco S. San Juan Jr., representing MMDA Chairman Atty. Romando S. Artes, commended San Juan for setting an example in urban development.
The local government emphasized that these initiatives demonstrate how compact urban centers can effectively implement sustainable infrastructure, promote renewable energy, and create livable public spaces.
