A 21-year-old motorcycle rider was arrested after allegedly ramming a police officer while attempting to evade an anti-criminality checkpoint in Barangay Fortune early Thursday morning, August 20.

The suspect, identified by authorities as “MJ,” faces formal charges of Direct Assault and Resistance and Disobedience to a Person in Authority following the incident that occurred around 2:35 A.M. along Fortune Avenue.

According to police reports, personnel from Fortune Police Sub-Station 7 were conducting routine checkpoint operations when they spotted an approaching motorcycle carrying a passenger without a safety helmet.

Officers signaled the rider to pull over for inspection, but the suspect ignored police directives and accelerated to flee the scene.

During the escape attempt, the suspect’s vehicle struck a responding officer, causing the law enforcer to crash onto the pavement and suffer bodily injuries.

Pursuing officers immediately chased down the fleeing suspect, taking him into custody shortly after.

Police confiscated the suspect’s white Suzuki Samurai 155 motorcycle, which was used in the incident. In addition to criminal charges, authorities issued traffic citation tickets to the rider for Reckless Driving and Riding Without a Safety Helmet.

The injured officer received immediate emergency medical attention from Marikina City Rescue 161 personnel before being rushed to the Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center for further treatment.

Meanwhile, the suspect underwent a mandatory medical examination and was booked at the Marikina City Police Station, where he remains in custody pending a court commitment order.

Police Brigadier General Melecio M. Buslig Jr., Acting District Director of the Eastern Police District (EPD), commended the officers’ quick response and reaffirmed the district’s strict stance against violence targeted at law enforcement.

“Our police officers risk their lives every day in the performance of their duties. Acts of violence against law enforcement personnel will never be tolerated,” PBGEN Buslig stated, emphasizing that the EPD will continue intensifying checkpoint operations to maintain peace and order across its jurisdiction.
