ALL main roads across Marikina are now fully passable, and the city has officially returned to normal after heavy rains brought by the enhanced southwest monsoon (habagat) triggered rising water levels earlier this week.
According to Mayor Marjorie Ann “Maan” Teodoro, the Marikina River water level receded to 14.1 meters on Tuesday afternoon—well within the normal threshold—following a high of 17.5 meters that briefly triggered a second alarm warning and forced evacuations in low-lying areas.
Evacuees Return Home to Kickstart Community Cleanup
Families who took shelter across the city’s 29 temporary shelters have safely returned to their homes.
Local authorities immediately launched clearing and sanitization operations targeting affected neighborhood streets and school buildings that served as evacuation centers.
To safeguard returning residents against post-flood health hazards, Mayor Teodoro led city health personnel and doctors on door-to-door visits in high-risk communities like Libis Bulelak in Barangay Malanday.
Health teams distributed vitamins and prophylactic anti-leptospirosis medications directly to individuals exposed to floodwaters.
Flood Mitigation Infrastructure Proves Effective
Despite continuous monsoon downpours, Mayor Teodoro highlighted that the vast majority of Marikina remained completely dry, with only minor, short-lived flooding recorded in riverside neighborhoods.
The chief executive attributed the city’s strong resilience to aggressive, year-round flood mitigation efforts.
“This demonstrates the effectiveness of our flood control infrastructure, early warning systems, and the close cooperation between the local government and our citizens,” Mayor Teodoro stated, emphasizing the continuous dredging of the Marikina River alongside regular drainage declogging and creek maintenance.
The city’s ongoing river management recently received a major boost following the turnover of a new amphibious dredger from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in June.
Operating alongside Marikina’s existing heavy equipment, the machinery works continuously to deepen the waterway and maximize its overall volume capacity during the rainy season.
While city officials maintain active weather monitoring and preparedness, local authorities continue to urge residents to stay vigilant and follow safety advisories during persistent rains.
