IN a major move to uplift marginalized sectors, the Presidential Commission for the Urban Poor (PCUP) and the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) are set to sign a landmark Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) aimed at expanding sustainable livelihood opportunities for urban poor communities nationwide.

The upcoming partnership will focus on equipping beneficiaries with specialized skills in fiber production, processing, weaving, and product development.

Beyond training, the initiative is designed to help urban poor families gain direct access to essential production resources and broader market opportunities to boost their income and enhance their overall quality of life. PhilFIDA Chairperson Ali Atienza expressed strong support for the collaboration, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to delivering impactful livelihood programs that empower communities and open doors to viable economic opportunities.

Echoing this sentiment, PCUP Commissioner Reynaldo Galupo highlighted that the partnership aligns with the commission’s core vision of bringing critical government services directly to the grassroots level.

Under the leadership of PCUP Chairperson and CEO Undersecretary Michelle Anne B. Gonzales, the commission is actively advancing its ALPAS Komunidad Framework.

This strategic framework relies on strengthening inter-agency partnerships to deliver targeted programs that address the immediate and evolving needs of the urban poor sector.

Furthermore, the PCUP-PhilFIDA collaboration supports the “whole-of-nation” approach of the Marcos administration, which prioritizes inclusive growth, community empowerment, and sustainable development across the archipelago.

Through this joint venture, both agencies aim to transform urban poor families into active participants in local economic development, providing them with practical, sustainable pathways toward self-reliance and improved living conditions.
