Angat Dam water level rebounds to 178.88 meters after historic lows

HEAVY rainfall from the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) over the weekend pushed the water level at Angat Reservoir to 178.88 meters above sea level (masl) as of 10:00 AM on August 13, 2026.

This marks an 18.88-meter rise from the dam’s critical threshold of 160 meters, signaling a vital recovery for Metro Manila’s primary water source.

The surge comes shortly after the reservoir hit an all-time low of 150.42 masl on July 25, 2026—its lowest recorded elevation in 59 years of operation since 1967.

Despite the record drop, water availability across concession areas remained stable.

Angat Dam has now entered its standard annual refilling season and is projected to reach its normal high-water level by the end of the year.

Despite the recent gains, the reservoir remains below its 180-meter minimum operating elevation.

Water security concerns linger as DOST-PAGASA forecasts persistent El Niño conditions in the Pacific through the first half of 2027.

In response, the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS), alongside concessionaires Manila Water Company, Inc. and Maynilad Water Services, Inc., are actively developing alternative water sources to build system redundancy, optimize supply management, and soften the impact of potential maintenance-related service disruptions.

MWSS and its partners emphasize that public conservation efforts remain vital to safeguarding the region’s shared water resources during prolonged climate challenges.
